How Much Do We Give, Christian? (Infographic)

When you think about the Christian leaders or mentors in your life, what are their defining characteristics?  What are the things that you watch them do on a daily basis that make you say, wow, he is a man of God?

Although there are many things that could fit into this category, one of the top three on my list is seeing someone giving so much that it hurts, and knowing that they may never see a return on what they just gave.

Last week I got a tweet from someone I do not believe professes to be a Christian.  This was the tweet: “I’m asking you for $1000, as per Matthew 5:42. I know as a Christian, you wont let me down. reply for email, & thanks!”

What would you say to this? Would you respond? (I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!)

I did respond to him, and I asked what he needed the money for.  He told me that it didn’t matter, but that it was going to a food pantry.  I then thanked him for showing me a great opportunity to help through giving, and that I would give through the website. (I did some ensuing research and I did not give $1000, but I did give)

I also told him that it did matter, because this verse is inculcating the proper spirit of Christian life, not giving rules to be literally carried out irrespective of circumstances.  We are also called to be good stewards.

Surprisingly, he then thanked me and said “you are the first person of faith who actually responded, and almost all of those asked were extremely wealthy.”

Now, there were a lot of ways that I could have responded to this, including the fact that being rude and seemingly mocking Christianity will be a difficult way to raise money from Christians. As I thought about this a little longer, though, I began to realize that I am guilty of ignoring God’s call in my life to give on many occasions.  I also began to realize that this is an American trend, that overall we do a really bad job of giving to the needy out of the blessings that God has given us.  While I was doing some research I found this quote:

Let’s see what the facts are for American Christian giving, and then think about your own life.  Are you giving so much that it hurts?

Stateofgiving

Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. (Ephesians 4:28)
